Exploring Tuna
Today I am exploring tuna. Why tuna? I’m looking for good and simple foods. I’m too tired of the same old lunches of cold cut sandwiches and fast food. Plus I just don’t think my stomach lining can take anymore McAbuse.

So let’s explore tuna. In front of me, as I type this, are two packages of tuna. Both are StarKist brand, by a fact of some good sales at the grocery over the past month.

The first one is a 6oz can of StarKist chunk light tuna in water. It costs usually around 69c (sale was 59c). It’s a typical staple in my cupboard (either StarKist or Chicken of the Sea). Ingredients are Light Tuna, Water, Vegetable Broth and Salt. It has 60 calories 5 of which are from fat, 250mg sodium, 30mg cholesterol and 13g of protein.

The next one is a 3oz flavor fresh pouch of StarKist premium chunk light tuna in sunflower oil. It cost usually around $1.12 (sale was 79c couldn’t pass it up), not typically in my cupboard. Ingredients are Light Tuna, Sunflower Oil, Vegetable Broth, and Salt. It has 165 calories of which 75 are from fat, 380mg sodium, 45mg cholesterol and 17g of protein.

Now before you all say, “Hey your comparing Oil and Water!” Yes, I realize that, now. I started typing before I thought of it. No point stopping now. You can look at the pros and cons of sunflower oil here.

Wondering which product has more tuna? Believe it or not, but it’s the 3oz pouch. Why? The 6oz can is full of water. After you drain all the water you only have 56g of tuna, with the pouch you have 85g of ready to use tuna.

What about taste? Both taste like chicken, er sorry, tuna. To me the oil adds a little bit more flavor, but both the water and oil are good. However the packet tuna does taste better to me than the canned. Why? Can’t say exactly, it does taste fresher, if you can say that about “canned” fish.

The can of tuna (in water) does come with an American Heart Association label on it, the pouch (in oil) doesn’t.

Which one would be good in your lunch bag? I think the pouch. Even though I actually carry a can opener with me, the pouch is very convenient and less messy.

In Conclusion: Can tuna tastes good. Pouch tuna tastes better. Tuna packed in water is better for you than tuna packed in oil.
