Hard To Handle

I know I shouldn't have, but I watched the very very very bad movie "Myra Breckinridge" (1970) on the Fox Movie Channel last week. Well in this movie was a cover of "Hard to Handle" by of all people Mae West. Before that very moment. The only version of that song I've ever heard was by the Black Crowes. If you had asked me who originally did that song I would have said the Black Crowes. Not only would I have been wrong, but I would have missed out on some wonderful renditions by Otis Redding, Grateful Dead, and Harpers Bizarre. I haven't discovered who orignaly perfomed it yet. Maybe I'll send an e-mail off to Brian Ibbott at Coverville to see if he knows.

Didn’t know that either. Interesting.
After pay day I may have to buy those and compile an album of nothing but "Hard to Handle" covers. Ha!

A friend of mine says "Hard to Handle" was originally done by Otis Redding.
Otis Redding was indeed the first to release the track, in 1968 (released after his death). He co-wrote the song with Allen Jones and Alvertis Isbell.

Yeah, you’re not the only one who didn’t know that the Crowes’ version was a cover. They did make it their own, which is the sign of a good cover. I think I’ll play the Redding version on an Originalville episode of Coverville in the next few weeks.
Thanks Brian.
